Azerbaijan is in a state of emergency. Naira Zohrabyan
As we have informed, recently a meeting has been held in Baku between the President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev during which the issue on Nagorno-Karabakh has been discussed.
According to V. Putin's Press secretary Dmitry Peskov the Presidents discussed the Russian-Azerbaijani bilateral relations and the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
Orer.am tried to clarify from the NA PAP faction leader Naira Zohrabyan what actually was hidden beneath this meeting and whether Russia which sells weapons to Azerbaijan, a hostile country for Armenia, takes steps which fruits would be "bitter" for Armenia.
"I would like to take as basis both Vladimir Putin’s statement and the statements of the country’s leaders be it Lavrov, Bordyuzha or Narizhkin that Russia's relations with any other country, be it Azerbaijan, Turkey cannot be directed against Armenia, the strategic ally of Russia. I would also like to rely upon the fact that we deal with a serious country. I must say that the "Prosperous Armenia" party is really concerned about the deepening of bilateral relations between these countries, taking into account the fact that Russia sells not only defensive, but offensive weapon to Azerbaijan. I have raised this issue for several times both during the meeting with Narizhkin at the National Assembly and during the Armenia-Russia Inter-parliamentary meeting in Russian State Duma. I should say that the answers didn’t satisfy me, but anyway, at this point we have the statements of the leaders of Russia that relations with the countries in the region can never be to the detriment of Armenia, the strategic ally.
And as to the relative peace in Azerbaijan, which is mainly connected to the European games taking place in the country Naira Zohrabyan mentioned:
"We see only the top layer of the iceberg. Azerbaijan is in a state of emergency, more than 80 journalists, civic activists are in prisons and the health condition of the two prisoners is critical. So, Azerbaijan is able to create an illusion of stability with its petrodollar disguise, but I welcome all the leaders of the European Union, who boycotted the games and did not participate in the opening ceremony for the reason that Azerbaijan does not respect its citizens' right to freedom of speech, as a result of which the prisons of Azerbaijan are filled with journalists, opposition leaders, civil society activists. By the way, we must admit that the so-called opposition does not exist in Azerbaijan. I am referring to the small doses of opponents who end up in prisons.”
